Mud Maxx Run

I’ll have my porta-shade, table, and some chairs set up at the Mud Maxx 5k this Saturday. Our brand-spanking new club banner will be revealed and displayed as well!

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, this is the perfect choice for a true trail nerd. What the run lacks in distance will be rewarded in mud and obstacles. Steve Boone is the race director and he is a heck-of-a-nice-guy. His low key races are usually a lot of fun.

Make sure to stop by the club tent and say howdy. I’ll be hanging out with Preston (the birthday boy) and Alison, while Andrea runs. I’d love to run, but I’m still resting the knee.

East End Park

I'm happy to report an absence of horse flies at East End Park. I covered 3.5 squishy miles on the trails. The forest canopy retained a lot of heat and humidity, which also seemed to keep the usual runners, bikers, and dog walkers out. Lucky me, I had to park all to myself!

No new TTN attendees. On the bright side, it will be easy for me to double the numbers with the addition of one more runner...

History in the making...

During a six-hour drive to Arkansas earlier this year three runners planted a seed. That seed was an initiative to resurrect the Tejas Trail Nerds and form a legitimate social running club rooted in North Houston.

Our first order of action was the club name. Out of respect for Joe Prusaitis (TejasTrails.com) we felt the Tejas Trail Nerds name was too close, so we elected to simply identify ourselves as Texas Trail Nerds.

We are a direct spin-off of the Kansas City Trail Nerds, whereas also known as the Mothership. Our name is a reflection of our location and our ties to the mothership. The Texas Trail Nerds will forever be in debt to Ben Holmes, the original nerd behind the trail nerd movement. During the last two months Ben has graciously assisted us with several components to kick start the group. Even more important, Ben has also set a gold standard for us to follow.

As our membership grows we hope to add monthly and even possibly weekly group runs. Although the club is in its infancy, we have aspirations to be a positive addition to the running community with club events such as;
-Volunteering our time at races
-Trail maintenance
-Beginner trail running program
-Group night runs
-Organize out-of-town races for members
-Environmentally friendly actions to reduce our footprint
-Host local “Fat Ass” events
-And when the time is right, our own club sponsored trail race

Our network of local trails will include, but are not limited to:
-Huntsville State Park
-Lone Star Trail (Sam Houston National Forest)
-Lake Houston Park
-Jesse H. Jones Park
-East End Park (Kingwood)
-W. Goodrich Jones State Forest
-Lake Livingston State Park
-Kleb Woods Nature Preserve
-Memorial Park (Houston)

Bruce, "The Juice" said it best;
A trail nerd is a runner who loathes the pavement, does not let a little bad weather stop them, does not whine, and is always ready to help a fellow trail runner. They originate from Kansas City, then like little seeds, propagate in other areas.
